This innovation from a company of which you may never have heard is actually very significant - especially if you are Vodafone.
barablu has launched VoIP mobile calls - and they are free between phones on the barablu network. The system runs on WiFi enabled mobiles such as the Nokia 9500 and I-mate SP5. Effectively barablu wants to become the Skype of the mobile world - hence the eye-catching offer of free calls.
And what is the significance to Vodafone, as the world's largest mobile operator? If (or more likely when) VoIP catches on for mobiles, Vodafone loses income from those lucrative long-distance mobile calls and, unlike companies such as Orange (part of France Telecom), it has no other business to fall back on.
